Although perhaps a discussion of Ted Forth's position as 'one righteous dude' or the various merits of the bad attitudes displayed by cats as varied as Garfield and Bucky Katt would be more appropriate to begin this blog with, instead I would like to focus on a comic much closer to my heart: Cathy. Cathy is, in fact, the only comic I feel a true connection with. It explores the deeper issues connected to womanhood which are pertinent to my everyday experience: shopping, marriage, and all the rest. I mean, who hasn't felt the pressure of buying a new smiwsuit for an aging body, or trying to plan a wedding with a man who just doesn't understand floral arrangements??? :( omg, men are so weird! and CRAZY!!! Anyway, Cathy is an incisive and honest look at the issues facing women in America today, and I really love it. NEXT TIME: why the Wizard of Id is totally hilarious. Kisses!

I only read Cathy in the Onion. When her insecurities are masked in Spanish I don't understand, it makes me want to oppress women less.
Today's "Cathy" really hits the spot. It's about the typical marketing scam techniques we're now seeing become mainstream. Cute!

I'm sure your next post will touch on this, but I was saddened by the news of the death of B.C. (and Wizard of Id) comic strip author Johnny Hart's death April 7 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Hart
RIP Johnny.
Luckily, thanks to computer archives, Johnny's family will continue to publish both his strips. Phew.
I love Cathy too! Nothing makes me feel more confident about being a woman, except maybe Anna Nicole's path to success.

Really? Cathy? I have to say- Cathy bores me. Its always the same with her.
I just wish Cathy would stop complaining for christsakes. Especially about sticking to her stipd diet- She looks great- why does she alway think she needs to go on a diet? Like the other day when she was talking to her mom on the phone and eating from the grocery bag at the same time- I wanted to scream- "NOO! Cathy, what about your stupid diet?!?"
I wish she would just take a chill pill.
p.s. I often wonder if the REAL Cathy dresses like the comic Cathy. Thoughts?
dan's satirical man-jumping-out-of-his-chair (it's a chronicle thing) review of cathy says more about the strip than any legimate analysis ever could. although things i would like to consider for the future are:
-an analysis of aaaaack! (thx micah)
-why have cathy's anxieties not been relieved since she actually succeeded in getting married, and how does this compare/relate to the evolution of garfield's storyline, in which jon has finally gotten together with arlene?
-why do i (and others i know) continue to read cathy every sunday, even though we know that it is actually the WORST COMIC in the paper, and that it doesn't even provide the kind of it's-so-annoying-it-entertains-me kind of enjoyment that some comics can (see clear blue water.)
-how does cathy fit into the larger picture as regards women in the comics. i'm interested in both women as comic artists and their representation as characters.
wikipedia reveals that as of 1987, cathy guisewite, the creator of cathy, looks kind of like cathy, but skinny, which somehow makes cathy's constant struggle with dieting seem all the harsher.
aside from cathy:
i DO plan to address the fact that for better or for worse is the best comic out there, and to look closely into bil keane not as a comic strip writer but AS A MAN. i have several reasons to believe there may be more than meets the eye.
and btw, nothing will sway my opinion that "you oughtta know" was written for dave coulier.

I was going to correct your little Garfield-related faux pas, but thankfully you've saved me the trouble (and yourself the embarassment). there are a lot of names and faces to remember in the little world I like to refer to as "the comics," and only through creating a nurturing and supportive online community can we overcome such overwhleming odds in order to truly plumb the depths of the eternal mysteries that wash over us every morning like the tide.
